It was Helenâs day off when they arrived back in Manhattan, but Eve was there to greet them when they walked off the elevator.
âHey, Mr. K!â Eve called cheerfully. âHey, Iâm Eve!â
Rhodes caught Izzyâs surprise at the difference in his housekeepersâ personalities, and he smiled to himself.
âIzzy, this is Eve. Eve, this is Ms. Fleur. Sheâs staying here for a while.â
âYou can call me Izzy,â Izzy said quickly.
âIâm going to do some work in the office,â Rhodes said, dropping a small kiss on Izzyâs cheek. Eveâs eyes widened until they almost popped, and she threw a hand up to her mouth to smother a giggle. Izzyâs face flushed red, and Rhodes realized that it was the first time that he had shown her affection in front of someone that wasnât a stranger.
In the Hamptons, they had gone out to dinner and encountered neighbors who had seen them holding hands or stealing kisses, but this was different. This was on his home turf.
She better get used to it, he mused. Consider Helen and Eve our warmup.
âLet me help you with your bags,â Eve said to Izzy, ushering her toward the north wing. Rhodes watched them go, a small smile toying on his lips. He had a feeling that Eve and Izzy would be fast friends, and that made him happy. Izzy needed the company.
Once they were out of sight, he retreated to his office and closed the door, reluctantly turning his cell phone back on.
As always, a slew of message notifications rang through, and Rhodes went through the daunting task of rifling through them.
His emails were overflowing, and even his snail-mail inbox was a pile.
I was gone a week, not a year. Holy hell. There really is no rest for the wicked.
But for all the work that awaited him, Rhodes had no regrets. He had half a mind to stride down the hall and tell Izzy to pack her bags so that they could go back to the Hamptons.
If I keep this up, Iâm going to lose all my businesses, Rhodes thought wryly, steeling him against the temptation even though the thought of giving it all up was not as frightening as he might have imagined. After all, he could still live happily on the wealth he had a hundred times over.
Maybe itâs time to take it down a notch and focus on things that really matter more than money.
His cell phone rang, and Rhodes eyed the display, noting the private caller. He ignored it and let it go through to voicemail as he turned his attention to the emails he had neglected.
Over the next hour, he continued to plug through his work, only pausing to take calls from clients or associates.
Two more times, the private caller rang, but as always, Rhodes ignored it and let voicemail pick up. He had no time for telemarketers, even if he did have sympathy for them. Rhodes knew he was doing them a service by not picking up and unleashing his frustrations on the poor guy on the other end of the call just trying to make a commission.
